Indictment Day Again

Yesterday was a big news day in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's criminal investigation into Donald Trump, his campaign, and his associates. Thirteen Russian nationals were indicted for in their efforts to help Trump get elected (details here) plus a fourteenth indictment against a California man was unsealed and his has pled guilty to identity theft in unspecified connection to the remaining indictments.

The Department of Justice released the full indictment in a scanned PDF (link here), and the kind people at The Atlantic released the indictment in text mode for handy searching (link here).

Trump, not surprisingly, tried to peddle this as some sort of personal exoneration of him since no one connected to him was indicted this week. That conveniently overlooks the fact that members of both his campaign and his administration have already been indicted on Russia-related charges.

Of course, he did not mention how these indictments blow his claim of "witch hunt" and "fake news" out of the water. Direct evidence has now been presented about how Russia tried to get him elected. He hopes we don't notice that.

More seriously, all Trump seems concerned about now is maintaining a claim that he thinks he's been exonerated. As President, he should be outraged a foreign nation directly attacked our election system.

But, instead, he's silent.

To add insult to injury, evidence revealed by the indictment shows that Russia tried to suppress minority turnout and to spread lies about voter fraud. Mother Jones posted an excellent article detailing this outrage (link here).

Again, nothing from Trump about that. No words about how this might be prevented in the future. Just a pathetic attempt to cover his ass.

What does this all mean? This quote from the first piece I linked in this entry, an article from Bloomberg, is patently clear: "the lack of any evidence of collusion in the indictment [yesterday] wasn’t the final word by prosecutors.... That doesn’t mean that the collaboration issue is finished."

Much more is coming. Stay tuned.
